A Beginners Guide To Transfer High Density Slurry

A Slurry pump is a special type of pump able to handle slurry. Transferring slurry which may be corrosive and erosive and may contain explosive media is a challenging matter for industry. Sujal Engineering’s premium quality manufactured pumps are widely recognized and used to transfer high density slurry in challenging environments.

What is a slurry?

A slurry can be a mixture of virtually any liquid combined with some solid particles. The combination of the type, size, shape and quantity of the particles together with the nature of transporting liquid determine the exact characteristics and flow properties of the slurry. Below are common characteristics of slurries:

  • Abrasive
  • Thick consistency
  • Can contain a high amount of solids
  • Usually settle quickly
  • Require more power to operate than a “water” pump

Working principle

The Working Principle is that slurry enters the pump through the eye of the rotating impeller which imparts a circular motion. The slurry is thrown outwards by centrifugal force and travels between the blades of the impeller. The slurry attains a high speed by the time it reaches the edge of the impeller. In the casing, its high speed energy is converted into pressure energy. The pumps increase the pressure of liquid and solid particles with the help of centrifugal force and convert electric energy into kinetic energy to pump the slurry. This mechanism makes pumping hazardous and light slurry liquids easy and maintenance free.

Why choose Sujal Engineering slurry pumps?

Slurry pumps are designed to increase the pressure of a liquid and solid particles with the help of centrifugal force and converts electrical energy into kinetic energy to pump the slurry. This mechanism makes pumping high density slurry easy and maintenance free. Our pumps can be used as part of a complete system or as a stand-alone piece of equipment and can be customized as per client demand.Slurry Pump

Slurry Pumps Types

There are mainly two types of slurry pumps: centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps.

  • Centrifugal pumps biggest advantage is that they can be vertical, horizontal or submersible. They can deliver high density slurry through pipelines at concentrations below 70% solids by weight
  • Positive displacement pumps which can deliver high heads with limited capacity are used in pumping slurry through pipelines with very high concentration of solids.

Benefits of Sujal Engineering slurry pumps:

  • Ideal for highly corrosive slurries with high density and abrasive media
  • In-house R&D ensures the best product quality
  • Vertical and horizontal designs to accommodate any operation
  • Replaceable liners enable simplified maintenance

Application of slurry pumps

  • Slurry pumps are used to move mixtures of liquid and solids in many industries with a broad spectrum of applications such as mine drainage, dredging of settling lagoons and pumping of drilling mud.
  • Slurry pumps are also widely used for the disposal of ash from thermal power plants.
  • Manufacture of fertilizers
  • Land reclamation
  • Long distance transportation of coal and minerals
