Centrifugal pump work on the principle of Bernoulli’s Law: ‘As velocity goes down, the pressure increases’. Centrifugal pump generates pressure by accelerating and then decelerating the movement of liquid through a pump. The liquid enters through the suction nozzle of a pump. From there it goes to the eye of impeller wherein it gets trapped between the blades of the impeller. As the liquid passes from the eye, through the blades toward the outside diameter of the impeller, the liquid undergoes an immediate increase in velocity.

The liquid that leaves the outer diameter of impeller enters into the internal casing wall of volute. Here it stops to collect in ever-expanding exit chamber of volute. The velocity is now converted into the pressure available at the discharge nozzle because the impeller diameter and motor speed are constant. The centrifugal pump can be considered to be a constant pressure device.
