Step By Step Guide To The Centrifugal Pump For Your Industrial Plant

Centrifugal pumps are one of the most useful pumps in a number of industries. It operates on the concept of centrifugal force and internal rotating mechanisms and is vital yet invaluable to a number of different fields. Here is step by step guide to install and operate the centrifugal pump for your system.

Installation:

     1. Foundation:

The foundation of the centrifugal pump should be substantially hard enough in order to support the pump and rest of installed industrial unit. Bolts for foundation should be of the proper size and imbedded in the concrete. A pipe sleeve should be larger than the bolt, which would allow for final positioning of the bolts.

     2. Mounting:

The pump base must be levelled in such a way that the pump shaft is in vertical alignment. The pump suction, as well as discharge flanges, should be in vertical and horizontal plane respectively.

      3. Field Alignment:

Enough spacing needs to be kept between the faces of coupling halves so that they do not strike each other when the driver rotor is moved towards the pump. In order to check the alignment, tools such as straight edge and taper gauge must be used.

     4. Piping:

The suction and discharge pipes should be supported independently with the help of pipe hangers and support blocks. This will prevent strain in the centrifugal pump joints and casing. The pipe alignment needs to be checked before a connection is made. The piping practices should be as per the manual or SOP of the centrifugal pump as it may directly affect the efficiency and power consumption of your pump.

     5. Wiring:

Centrifugal pump wiring needs to be of adequate size to prevent voltage drop. It should be noted not to start centrifugal pump until it is filled with liquid.

     6. Rotation:

The rotation of the centrifugal pump is indicated on the pump casing. The correct rotation needs to be established before assembling the coupling on base-mounted units.

     7. Grounding Motor:

Connect the ground wire to the approved ground and then connect to the provided terminal.

     8. Priming Flooded Suction:

Open the air vent valve or plug in the centrifugal pump casing to open the gate valve of the suction line. The suction line and pump should be filled slowly with liquid until a steady flow is observed flowing from an air vent. It highly recommended opening the air vent valve to ensure all air has been removed from the casing.

     9. Starting The Centrifugal Pump:

In order to start the centrifugal pump, the gate valve in the discharge line should be closed and opened gradually so that the motor approaches full speed.

     10. Servicing:

Periodical maintenance of the centrifugal pump is important to keep it problem free and in good condition.

Operation:

  1. Open the suction valve of a centrifugal pump which will cause the liquid to flow into the impeller and fill the volume.
  2. Open the vent valve which is on the discharge line before the discharge valve of the centrifugal pump. This will cause air to move out of the casing and get filled with the liquid.
  3. If some liquid comes out from the vent valve, the valve should be closed.
  4. Open the bypass valve of the discharge valve.
  5. Start the pump and let it attain its capacity in the pressure gauge on the discharge line.
  6. When the pressure gauge is stable it is time to open the discharge valve of the centrifugal pump.
